These buildings featured interior/exterior - covered working spaces where the craftsmen and their activities were on show to onlookers as a sort of ‘productive theatre’. In this same manner we imagined, the new Follo workshop conceptually as a collection of roofs that provide a covered stage for craftsmen, students and the public to gather under to participate in the acts of making, sharing, and communicating. Our building is nestled on a north-south axis in the densely forested site. The monopitch roof-typology gives the building a distinctive expression whilst providing important functional qualities to the workshop spaces within. The building is constructed primarily from wood. Solid timber walls support a roof structure constructed from glulam timber. This allows for large, open and uninterrupted workshop spaces which are bathed with diffused northern light. The garden offers a serene environment and respite from the city, aiming to capture the unique, immersive experience offered at the Regent Street boutique. &nbsp;Architecturally, its strength lies in its simplicity and spatiality. Taking one of the most fundamental of architectural devices, the arch; repeating and extending it around the interior perimeter of the boutique, creates an elegant arcade and provides the framework upon which the garden has grown and spread. The centrepiece, a fully handmade tree, sits in the heart of the garden. The tree feeds off the range of ingredients used in the signature scents and in turn produce the fruits of the garden, which materialise as bottles of Jo Malone London fragrance.&nbsp; The garden culminates in an immersive Tasting Bar™ experience, intensified with a deep arch of foliage overhead, elevating the visitors’ sense of escape from the city. Each of the 100,000 pieces of the garden has been creased, shaped and folded by hand. The handmade aspect of the paper garden reflects the craftsmanship and care that goes into the creation of each of the individual fragrances. Large openings take advantage of the south-west orientation and provide framed views over the mature garden. A split level plan was introduced on the ground floor to connect the house to the lowered rear garden. Large full-height sliding doors open out onto a south facing terrace with easy access to the garden beyond. The external terrace, acting as a plinth, helps to ground the new extension into the slope.Internally, full height oak joinery is proposed throughout. A large utility room and a storage area are concealed behind this deep wall of timber. The insertion of deep seating in the joinery offers a comfortable, sheltered enclosure - a perfect place to read and relax. The lightly washed oak joinery elements along with natural stone worktops and mortar washed brickwork, offer a warm, muted interior palette, reflecting our clients request for a calm and relaxing everyday space. We were approached by New Wave London to assist them with the refurbishment of their new 2-storey 300sqm office in north London. The project was completed from start to finish in 16-weeks to coincide with the company’s relocation and expansion plans. A rigorous plan comprising of new reception area, state-of-the-art conference room and open-plan office includes flexible break-out areas for ad-hoc meetings and informal discussions. Ancillary staff accommodation and storage is concealed behind a deep wall of timber. A palette of robust materials was combined with soft furnishings and warm lighting. The New Wave London brand is expressed in the execution of the high quality finish and refined aesthetic. The building draws inspiration from the great medieval barns and typical agricultural buildings located in the area. A perfectly square plan rests on an elevated podium overlooking the wood. An oversized pitched roof provides shelter from the elements whilst the centralised roof light helps illuminate the main space. Externally, the building is clad entirely in charred larch to give the building a uniform appearance. Internally, stained concrete floors and timber linings are proposed throughout. The large sliding doors secure the building during hours of closure.&nbsp; The everyday material palette and simplistic detailing ensures the building can be constructed from locally sourced materials with the use of local labour. The new single storey extension wraps around the the existing rear return, extending into the garden to provide a large open plan kitchen, living and dining space for every day use. Lowering of the existing floor level creates a seamless connection with the existing garden with large, full-height pivot glazed doors defining the threshold between interior and external space. A large column, centred on the kitchen island, provides support for the large, full length precast beam above. A large skylight over the dining area allows narural light to penetrate deep into the floor plan. The ground floor of each house opens onto the facing ‘mews street’, extending the everyday living spaces. This intervention facilitates neighbourly interaction and in turn, seeks to promote a sense of community. The proposed car-free site ensures the external areas are a safe and secure place for children to play. Located at the end of the Cape St. Vincent peninsula the building is embedded into the existing landscape. The structure is formed of two levels, each offering different views and experiences. The top deck provides a respite following the long walk from the town. From here, one has unobstructed, high-level views of the historic coast line. It is also a perfect place for big-wave viewing. On the lower level, an enclosed garden with surrounding arcade offers a sheltered environment for contemplation and reflection. The journey concludes with a double height main space that offers grand panoramic views over the Atlantic Ocean. The use of one material facilitates the impression of a single object in the landscape. The straight lines of the board marked concrete are counter balanced with the organic shapes of the native vegetation.
